We’ll also discover the artistry behind Eric’s approach to strategic technology and coaching and gain valuable insights into how technology and human potential coexist harmoniously.
Simplifying Complexity in Technology
Sterling: I love how you simplify complex technology. How do you ensure people use the right tools and strategies to achieve their goals?
Eric: It begins with language. Ensuring we use the same vocabulary is crucial. I start with definitions and understanding the customer’s goals. Then, we align on their goals and assess if they have the tools, people, and processes to get there. Clear communication and goal setting are key to simplifying complexity.
Setting and Achieving Smart Goals
Sterling: How do you help people set goals and milestones?
Eric: Everyone wants to end up somewhere, but few do it intentionally. Setting clear, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART) goals is essential. I guide individuals in defining their goals, conducting discovery sessions to identify challenges and desired outcomes, and then breaking down these goals into actionable steps.
Applying Smart Goals Personally
Sterling: How have you used SMART goals in your own life?
Eric: One personal example is my decision to go back to school. I specified the type of program I wanted, set a timeline, and ensured I had the necessary resources, such as letters of recommendation. By breaking down the goal into specific, measurable steps.
Career Highlights and Transition
Sterling: Tell us about your Microsoft role and transition to running your own practice.
Eric: I started at Microsoft in technical sales, focusing on data center modernization and cloud technologies for regulated industries. My passion for strategy and emerging technologies led me to work closely with executives on innovative solutions. Recognizing a gap in change management, I transitioned to my own practice to help leaders implement new technologies effectively and align their teams with strategic goals.
Embracing the Role of a Coach
Sterling: How do you enjoy coaching, and how do your sessions flow?
Eric: I love coaching. It’s transformative for both the coach and the coachee. A coach walks alongside you, asking thoughtful questions and helping you realize your potential. My sessions focus on clarity, commitment, and leveraging individual strengths to achieve desired outcomes. It’s about unlocking the brilliance within and providing a roadmap to success.
Early Experiences and Inspiration in Technology
Sterling: What drew you to technology, and what advice would you give to young people pursuing a career in this field?
Eric: My passion for technology started in middle school when I was homeschooled. I enjoyed understanding how things work and received positive feedback when sharing my projects. For young people, I advise finding a technology related to something they’re already passionate about. Experiment, build projects, and seek mentors. Every industry now intersects with technology, so there’s immense innovation potential.
Current Projects and the Future of the Metaverse
Sterling: What projects are you currently working on, and what’s your perspective on the future of the metaverse?
Eric: I’m focused on helping organizations understand and leverage mixed and augmented reality, keeping humans at the center of these experiences. The metaverse is evolving, with building blocks like blockchain, AI, and VR. Today’s practical applications, such as virtual meetings and digital asset marketplaces, provide a glimpse into the metaverse’s potential.
Experiencing AfroTech
Sterling: Tell us about your experience at AfroTech.
Eric: AfroTech is the largest conference for African American technologists. It’s incredible to see so much brilliance in one space. The connections and learnings are invaluable. I participated in the first annual hackathon, which was a highlight. It was a hands-on experience to solve problems using AI, showcasing the collaborative and innovative spirit of the community.
